Yusmarg Day Trip with Kids from Srinagar

Yusmarg Day Trip with Kids from Srinagar

Travel · October 14, 2026

Yusmarg is the meadow we suggest when a family wants one quiet mountain day from Srinagar without a gondola queue or a long highway. It is a wide basin of grass ringed by pine and fir, with the Doodh Ganga stream running along one side. Children get room to run, parents get to sit down, and the drive is short enough to be back in Srinagar for dinner. Here is how we plan that day for families.

Yusmarg in a few lines

  • Where: Budgam district, south-west of Srinagar, reached through the town of Charar-i-Sharif
  • How far: both the Directorate of Tourism, Kashmir and the Budgam district page give 47 km from Srinagar; the district page's road section gives 53 km from Srinagar and the airport
  • How long: 1.5 to 2 hours by road (Directorate); "under 2 hours" by car (Budgam district)
  • How high: about 2,400 m (7,874 ft), per the Directorate
  • Best months: April to October on the Directorate's calendar, with September and October listed for clear skies and autumn colours
  • Facilities: limited. The Directorate says to carry a packed lunch and water, that food outlets are few and mobile network is limited

A note from our desk: both official pages say 47 km in their introductions, then the district page gives 53 km in its road directions without explaining the gap. We plan on the longer figure and, with children and a tea stop, about two hours each way. That is our planning range, not an official time.

We do not print taxi, pony or entry rates here; they change with the season and the route, and we would rather quote your actual date. Our cab service page explains what goes into a day-car quote.

Is Yusmarg a good day out with kids?

For most families, yes. The main meadow is open and gently rolling, so a three-year-old can run without you worrying about a drop. There is no single point you have to reach, which takes the pressure off. And because it is less commercial than the big resorts, as the Directorate itself says, the arrival is usually calmer.

What it is not is a resort. There is no gondola, no row of restaurants and not much to buy. Children who need a ride or an activity to stay happy may find it slow; children who like grass, sticks, a stream and a picnic usually love it.

How Yusmarg compares with Doodhpathri and Gulmarg

Families often ask us to pick one of the three. These are figures from official pages and our own live pages only.

  Yusmarg Doodhpathri Gulmarg
From Srinagar 47 km (Directorate and Budgam intro); 53 km by road (Budgam) 42 km (Directorate and Budgam) about 56 km (our Gulmarg page)
Road time 1.5 to 2 hours (Directorate) 1.5 to 2 hours (Directorate) roughly two hours (our Gulmarg page)
Height about 2,400 m (Directorate) about 2,730 m (Directorate) -
Season note best April to October; winter road can close for weeks (Budgam) road accessible May to October (Directorate) year-round; snow from December to March
What the day is quiet pine basin, stream, optional forest walk to Nilnag wide open meadow and stream gondola, ponies, busier meadow

In plain terms: Yusmarg is the quiet one, with forest close around the meadow and a walk you can add if the children have legs left. Doodhpathri is a wider, more open meadow and sits higher. Our Doodhpathri day trip with kids post has the full plan. Gulmarg is the big day with the gondola, and it is busier. See our Gulmarg sightseeing post for the family route there. For a longer mountain day, see our Sonamarg day trip with kids.

One rule we hold firmly: do not combine Yusmarg with Gulmarg or Doodhpathri on the same day with children. Two meadows in one day means the children enjoy neither and spend the afternoon in the car. Give each one its own day, or pick one. Our Kashmir tourist places with distance post helps you space out the drives across the week.

Yusmarg in October

October is the end of the season on the Directorate's calendar. Early in the month it is often at its best: clear mornings, golden grass, cold stream water and few visitors. By the second half the days are shorter and colder, and an early cold spell can change the plan.

There is no IMD climate table for Yusmarg, so we will not quote a Yusmarg temperature. For scale, IMD's 1991-2020 normals put Srinagar's October average at about 23.0 C by day and 6.2 C at night, and Gulmarg, a high meadow that does have an IMD table, at about 14.2 C by day and 3.8 C at night. Yusmarg is much higher than Srinagar, and wind on the open meadow and shade under the pines make it feel colder still, so dress the children for a colder day than the city. Our October weather in Kashmir post has the full table and packing notes.

Daylight matters too. Our calculation for Srinagar puts sunset at about 6:15 pm on 1 October, about 5:56 pm on 15 October and about 5:38 pm on 31 October. With forest and ridges around the meadow, shade arrives earlier than in the city, so plan to be packing up by mid-afternoon.

Winter is a different story. The Budgam district page says the road sometimes closes after snowfall and the area can stay cut off for weeks, so we do not plan Yusmarg as a winter family day; Gulmarg is the snow trip. In late October we check the road and the weather the evening before, and we will swap in a Srinagar day if it does not look sensible. Our Srinagar sightseeing with kids plan is the usual swap.

A family day plan: Srinagar to Yusmarg and back

Morning: leave after breakfast

Confirm the road and the forecast the evening before, and pack the food bag then. If one child is already tired or unwell, that is the night to move Yusmarg, not the morning. Leave early enough to have the meadow before lunch, but there is no need for a dawn start. In October the grass is cold and wet early, and children enjoy it more once the sun is on it. The road after Charar-i-Sharif is scenic but winding, as the Directorate says, so sit a child who gets carsick by a window, keep their usual medicine handy and ask the driver to stop early rather than late.

Charar-i-Sharif is the town with the shrine of Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani, one of the most respected places in Kashmir. If you would like to stop on the way, dress modestly, keep the children close and quiet, and ask your driver where to park and what is expected inside. With small children, keep it short.

Late morning to mid-afternoon: the meadow first

Spend the first hour on the main meadow before deciding anything else. A few rules:

  • Pick a base spot in sight of where the car is parked, and keep the bags there
  • Keep small children on the open grass. The forest edge is close on several sides, and it is easy for a child to wander between the trees out of sight
  • Look at the Doodh Ganga from the bank. The water is fast and cold and the stones are slippery. No wading, no stepping across on rocks
  • Watch where grazing animals and ponies are, and keep children clear of ponies that are not yours
  • Eat a proper lunch on the meadow before anyone gets tired, not just biscuits

Ponies, without the pressure

The Directorate says ponies are available for hire, with rides to Nilnag a popular route. You may still be approached as you arrive. It is fine to say you will walk the meadow first and decide later; on a gently rolling meadow, walking is often the better choice anyway.

If you do take ponies, follow the rules on our horse riding page: a handler walks beside each pony, small children sit in front of a parent or ride with the handler holding the rein, and you agree the exact route, the time out and the total fare for everyone before anyone gets on. Pay at the end. Ponies are not part of our quotes, because the rate depends on the route you choose on the day.

Nilnag, only if the day is going well

Nilnag is a small lake in the forest beyond the meadow. The Directorate describes it as reached on foot or by pony through forest trails, and puts it at about 13 km from the Yusmarg meadow. Treat that figure as a reason to ask before you set off: confirm the route length and the time it takes with the pony handler or local staff at the meadow that day.

Our rule with children: do the meadow first, and only think about Nilnag if it is still before midday, everyone has eaten, the weather is clear and the children are asking for more. For most families with children under eight, the meadow and the stream are the whole day, and that is a good day. Older children who walk well can go further, with a firm agreed time to be back at the car.

Do not start towards Nilnag in the afternoon in October. The way back through the forest is darker and colder than you expect, and the drive to Srinagar still comes after it.

When to turn back

Start packing up when any one of these happens, even if you planned to stay longer:

  • A child is wet, cold or crying with cold hands. Wet feet from the stream bank end family days fast
  • Anyone has a headache, feels sick or is unusually tired. Most visitors are fine at Yusmarg's height, but with children we head down rather than push on
  • Cloud drops onto the meadow, the wind picks up or rain starts
  • It is mid-afternoon. October light goes early behind the ridges, and the last part of the drive into Srinagar is slower in evening traffic

Food, toilets and network: plan for less, not more

The Directorate says facilities at Yusmarg are limited and food outlets are few, and late in the season some places may not be open at all. Plan the day as a picnic:

  • Carry a packed lunch, water and snacks for everyone. Ask your Srinagar hotel the night before if it can pack lunch
  • Do not count on clean toilets at the meadow. Use a proper stop on the way, and carry tissues, wet wipes and a small bag for nappies or rubbish
  • Carry some cash for tea, ponies and parking, since card payment and network may not work
  • Mobile network is limited, the Directorate says. Agree a meeting point and a time with older children before anyone explores, and tell family at home you may be out of reach for a few hours

There is limited accommodation, including JKTDC tourist huts and basic guesthouses, and the Directorate notes that most visitors come as a day trip from Srinagar. We plan it the same way, keeping the children in one Srinagar hotel, as in our Kashmir family package.

What to pack for Yusmarg in October

For each child:

  • A hooded warm jacket over a fleece or sweater, a warm cap and thin gloves
  • Closed shoes with grip, and spare socks and a spare pair of trousers in a plastic bag
  • Sunglasses, a cap with a brim and sunscreen. Mountain sun is strong even on a cold day

For the car and the day bag:

  • The packed lunch, a flask of something warm, water and snacks
  • A picnic mat, because the grass can be damp until late morning
  • Wet wipes, tissues, a small first-aid pouch and any medicine your family already uses
  • A bag to carry your rubbish back to Srinagar

If your trip runs into December, our Kashmir in winter with kids post has the fuller layering list.

What to confirm before you book

  • Road and weather the evening before and on the morning, especially from mid-October
  • What the quote covers. Our day-car quote covers the car, driver and waiting time. Ponies, food and any entry or parking charges are paid on the spot
  • Vehicle size and a working heater. One family with bags is comfortable in an Innova Crysta. Two families sharing the day are often happier in one Tempo Traveller than in two cars
