Is it safe to visit Kashmir? For the regular tourist circuit of Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, yes, lakhs of Indian families visit every year and most trips go smoothly. But "safe" here means the same as anywhere in the mountains. You plan for the weather, you follow local advisories, and you stay flexible when a road or a spot is closed for the day.

We live and work in Srinagar. Our drivers are on these roads every day. So this is not a sales pitch. It is what we tell our own relatives when they visit.

What Is the Tourist Situation in Kashmir Right Now?

On a normal day, Srinagar feels like any busy hill city. Shikaras on Dal Lake, families at the Mughal gardens, traffic on Boulevard Road, crowds at the Gulmarg gondola. You will see police and security personnel at many places. For first-timers that can look serious, but it is a routine part of life here.

Being honest: the situation can change at short notice. Sometimes authorities close a particular spot, stop traffic on a stretch, or suspend mobile internet in an area for a while. When that happens, tourists are generally asked to follow instructions and wait it out, and most itineraries just get reshuffled.

Our advice is simple. Check the latest news and official advisories a few days before you fly, and again on arrival. Your hotel or travel agent in Srinagar will usually know about closures before they reach national TV.

Is Kashmir Safe for Families?

Families are the biggest group of tourists we host. For a family trip, the real risks are usually practical ones, not dramatic ones.

• Long mountain drives with small kids or elderly parents
• Cold, especially in Gulmarg and Sonamarg, even in April or October
• Crowds and pushing at the gondola base in peak season
• Slippery snow and ice in winter

Keep the pace easy. Do not try Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam on three back-to-back days with a toddler. Carry proper jackets, gloves and waterproof shoes. And agree on a meeting point with kids in crowded places like the gondola base or Baisaran.

Is Kashmir Safe for Women and Solo Travellers?

We regularly arrange trips for women travelling alone and for groups of women friends. Most say they felt comfortable, and many are surprised by how helpful local people are.

A few sensible points:

• Stay in well-reviewed, registered hotels or houseboats, especially for your first trip.
• Use a cab booked through your hotel or agency, not a random vehicle from the road.
• Dress modestly in the old city and at shrines like Hazratbal. Carry a scarf, as covering your head is expected inside shrines.
• Share your live location with family and keep your driver's number saved.
• Avoid isolated trails after dark, as you would anywhere else.

Weather and Road Safety: The Bigger Risk

If you ask us what actually disrupts trips, the answer is weather, not anything else.

Snow and winter roads

From December to February, snow can close roads for a day or more. The Tangmarg to Gulmarg stretch often needs snow chains or 4x4 vehicles after fresh snowfall. Let a local driver make that call. Do not self-drive a rented car on snow unless you have real experience.

Zojila and the Sonamarg road

Sonamarg is about 80 km from Srinagar, and Zojila Pass is roughly 20 km beyond it on the road to Ladakh. Zojila has traditionally closed for part of every winter. In the 2025 to 2026 winter the Border Roads Organisation kept it open for much longer than usual, but avalanches in March 2026 still forced closures. The lesson: treat anything beyond Sonamarg in winter and early spring as weather-permitting.

Mughal Road

The Mughal Road between Shopian and Poonch closes in winter and usually reopens in spring. Even when open, traffic runs at fixed timings, and fresh snowfall can shut it again. Check the Traffic Police advisory before planning a trip on it.

Jammu to Srinagar by road

The national highway via Ramban and Banihal can close for landslides or snow. If you are coming by road, keep one buffer day in your plan. We tell every guest the same thing.

Altitude and Health Tips

Most of the Kashmir tourist circuit is at moderate altitude. As per J&K Tourism brochures, Gulmarg sits around 2,650 metres (8,694 ft) and Sonamarg around 2,740 metres (9,000 ft). Serious altitude sickness is uncommon at these heights, but the Gulmarg Gondola Phase 2 takes you close to 4,000 metres within minutes.

• If anyone in your group has heart or breathing problems, talk to your doctor before going up to Apharwat on Phase 2.
• Drink plenty of water. The dry cold air dehydrates you quickly.
• Carry regular medicines, plus something for motion sickness, colds and stomach upsets.
• Sunscreen and sunglasses are a must on snow.

Srinagar has major hospitals, and basic health facilities exist in the main resorts. In remote meadows, help takes time to reach, so do not skip the basics.

Registered Taxis, Ponies and Shikaras

Most complaints we hear from tourists are about overcharging, not safety. You can avoid most of it.

Book your cab through your hotel or a registered agency. In Pahalgam, sightseeing to Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari runs on local union taxis, which is normal. For shikaras and Pahalgam pony rides, the tourism authorities notify fixed rates, and the rate board is displayed at the ghat or pony stand. Ask for it. For the Gulmarg Gondola, book only on the official J&K Cable Car Corporation portal linked from jammukashmircablecar.com. The corporation itself warns visitors not to fall for touts.

Mobile SIM Rules in Jammu and Kashmir

This one catches a lot of people. Prepaid SIM cards issued outside Jammu and Kashmir do not work here. The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board states it plainly on its telecom page: prepaid connections of other states are not allowed to work in J&K.

Postpaid connections from other states generally work. So before you travel, either switch one family number to postpaid or plan to buy a local prepaid SIM in Srinagar with your ID. Save hotel and driver numbers offline, and download offline maps. Coverage on mountain roads is patchy anyway.

Amarnath Yatra Season: Expect Crowds

The Amarnath Yatra runs in July and August. The 2026 Yatra ran from 3 July to 28 August. Its two base routes start near Pahalgam and at Baltal near Sonamarg. During this period, expect heavy security, convoy timings on the highway and more crowds in Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
