Direct answer
A Sonamarg day trip from Srinagar works well with children if you treat it as one drive and one easy walk, not a race to Zero Point. Leave after breakfast, spend your time on the Thajiwas side valley at the children's pace, start back by mid-afternoon, and keep the Sindh river stops for the return. The Directorate of Tourism, Kashmir lists Sonamarg at 80 km from Srinagar; the Ganderbal district page says 87 km. We plan on roughly two and a half to three hours each way with children and stops. That is our desk's planning range, not an official time. Road conditions change day to day, so we confirm the evening before.
This post is the family day plan. For the drive itself and how the cab is quoted, see our Srinagar to Sonamarg taxi page. For the valley overview, see Sonmarg.
Is Sonamarg a good day trip with kids?
Yes, for most families, with one condition: you pick Thajiwas as the goal and treat everything beyond it as optional. Thajiwas is the side valley above the main Sonamarg meadow, with the glacier and old snow at its far end. Children usually want the snow more than anything else on the day. Whether any snow is within easy reach in October depends on the year and the week, so we never promise it.
Zero Point is a different trip. It sits up near the Zojila road, it is reached in local union cars from Sonamarg rather than in your Srinagar cab, and it only works when the pass road is open. With small children or older parents in the car, we usually leave it out of a day trip. Fewer hours in vehicles, more time on your feet in clean air.
The numbers, and where the sources disagree
We only print figures we could check on official pages. Where two official sources differ, we show both.
| What | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Srinagar to Sonamarg | 80 km | Directorate of Tourism, Kashmir: Sonamarg brochure and Sonamarg page |
| Srinagar to Sonamarg | 87 km, "under 3 hours" by road | Ganderbal district administration, Sonamarg page |
| Drive time | "approximately 2 hours by road" | Directorate Sonamarg page |
| Sonamarg altitude | 9,000 ft (brochure); 2,800 m / 9,186 ft (web page) | Directorate of Tourism, Kashmir |
| Thajiwas from Sonamarg | 3 km (brochure); 7 km from the town (web page) | Directorate of Tourism, Kashmir |
| Thajiwas by trek | pony or "moderate trek (3-4 hours)" | Directorate Sonamarg page |
| Zojila from Sonamarg | 17 km (web page); "a 20 km drive" (brochure) | Directorate of Tourism, Kashmir |
Two notes from the desk. First, we read the 2 hour figure as a clear-road time. With a stop for tea, a child who needs a break on the river bends, and Ganderbal traffic leaving the city, we plan longer. Second, the two Directorate pages do not explain why they give 3 km and 7 km for Thajiwas. Either way, plan the walk by time and energy, not by kilometres.
We do not print pony fares, union car fares or taxi fares here. The Directorate page says pony union rates are fixed; ask the rate and the exact route before anyone gets on, and our desk can tell you what guests were paying that week.

A family day plan: Srinagar to Thajiwas and back
Evening before: confirm the road
We check the Sonamarg road the evening before and again in the morning. The Sonamarg tunnel (earlier called Z-Morh) opened on 13 January 2025 and bypasses the stretch that used to get cut off, but weather can still shut or slow the road for a day. If our driver says the day is not sensible, we swap it for a Srinagar day and move Sonamarg. A closed gate with tired children is the worst version of this trip.
Morning: leave after breakfast
There is no need for a dawn start for Thajiwas. October mornings are cold, and children cope better once the sun is up. The road runs out through Ganderbal and Kangan and follows the Sindh river for much of the way. Keep motion-sickness medicine handy if anyone in the family gets carsick on bends, and ask the driver to stop before a child is sick, not after.
Midday: Thajiwas at the children's pace
From the Sonamarg market you go up toward Thajiwas either on foot or on a pony. With children, these rules keep the day calm:
- Walk the first stretch together and decide on ponies once you see how the kids are moving
- If you take ponies, ask for a handler walking beside each child's pony, and agree the end point before you start
- Stop where the children are happy. You do not have to reach the snow line to have a good day
- Keep children off old snow over running water and off steep snow slopes, however tempting the photo
- Eat something proper at the top end before you turn around, not only biscuits
Older parents often do well on a pony with a handler, or with a short walk and a long sit in the meadow. Tell us ages and mobility in advance and we will suggest which.
When to turn back
Turn back when any of these happens, even if you have not reached the point you planned:
- A child is wet, cold or crying with cold hands. Wet socks end family days faster than anything
- Anyone has a headache, feels sick or is unusually tired. Sonamarg is at about 2,800 m per the Directorate; most visitors are fine, but at this height we go down rather than push on
- Cloud drops onto the valley or rain starts
- It is mid-afternoon. October light goes early in the mountains, and the last stretch into Srinagar is slower in evening traffic
Afternoon: the river on the way home
The Sindh river stops on the drive back are where many children get their best hour: stones to throw, a flask of kahwa for the adults, nobody rushing. Our driver knows the pull-offs. Do not walk children onto wet river rocks; the water is cold and fast.
Packing for Sonamarg in October
There is no IMD climate table for Sonamarg in the Met Centre Srinagar file we use, so we will not quote a Sonamarg October temperature. For a sense of scale, IMD's 1991-2020 normals put Srinagar's October average at about 23.0 C by day and 6.2 C at night, and Gulmarg, another high resort, at about 14.2 C and 3.8 C. Sonamarg sits much higher than Srinagar, so dress for a colder day than the city. Our October weather in Kashmir post has the full IMD table.
For each child:
- A warm jacket with a hood, plus a fleece or sweater underneath
- Full-length trousers, a warm cap and thin gloves
- Waterproof or at least closed shoes with grip, and a spare pair of socks in a plastic bag
- Sunglasses and sunscreen; snow and high-altitude sun are bright even on a cool day
For the car and the bag:
- Water, snacks and a simple lunch backup. Late in the season, do not assume every dhaba in Sonamarg is open
- Small cash for ponies, tea and toilets
- Wet wipes, a small first-aid pouch, and any medicine your family already uses
- A towel or blanket in the cab for the drive home
What to confirm before you book
- Road status the evening before and the morning of travel
- What the quote covers: the Srinagar car, waiting time in Sonamarg, and whether any union car is included (usually it is not, and for a Thajiwas day you will not need one)
- Vehicle size for your group, and a heater that works in the cab
- Pony route and rate, agreed on the spot before anyone gets on
- Return time: tell us when you want to be back in Srinagar and we plan the turnaround from that
Do not stack Sonamarg with Gulmarg on the same day with children. Our Kashmir tourist places with distance table shows why: they are on different roads out of Srinagar. Put a city or lake day between the two long drives.
Booking a Sonamarg family day with D2 Holidays
Send us your dates, the number of adults, children's ages, any older parents who need easy walking, and whether Zero Point is a must or only a hope. We will tell you honestly if the day makes sense for your group and season. A Sonamarg day fits inside our Kashmir family package, or we can quote the Srinagar to Sonamarg taxi on its own.

Sonamarg with kids: common questions
How far is Sonamarg from Srinagar?
The Directorate of Tourism, Kashmir lists 80 km. The Ganderbal district page says 87 km. We plan roughly two and a half to three hours each way with children and stops, and confirm road conditions the evening before.
Can we do Sonamarg and Thajiwas in one day with small children?
Yes. Thajiwas is the part of Sonamarg that suits children best. Leave Srinagar after breakfast, take it slowly up the side valley on foot or on ponies with handlers, and start back by mid-afternoon.
Should we go to Zero Point with kids?
We usually advise against it on a family day trip. Zero Point needs a local union car from Sonamarg, runs only when the Zojila road is open, and adds hours in a vehicle. Thajiwas gives most children the open space they want, and any snow that happens to be around.
Is it too cold for children in October?
Not if they are dressed for it. Sonamarg is colder than Srinagar, especially in shade and after a wet walk. Pack a hooded jacket, cap, gloves and spare socks, and turn back early if a child gets wet or cold.
Is Sonamarg open right now?
It changes day to day with weather, and we do not promise it in advance. The Sonamarg tunnel has made the road more reliable than it used to be, but we still check the evening before and the morning of travel. Call +91 70062 71178 for the current position.
