Kashmir in October first week vs later weeks

IMD monthly normals do not publish an official week-by-week split inside October. From running family trips out of our Boulevard office, this is how the month usually behaves. Treat it as operational guidance, then verify with the current IMD forecast.

First week (about 1–7 Oct)

Days in Srinagar often still feel late-summer mild. Gardens and Dal Lake are comfortable for longer walks. Gulmarg is cool but usually open for meadow walks. Rain risk is low compared with July–August, yet a short wet spell can still appear if a western disturbance moves through. Pack the warm layer even if the airport feels warm when you land.

Mid month (about 8–20 Oct)

This is the stretch most families like. Clearer views are common. Daytime Srinagar stays workable for kids without heavy winter gear. Nights keep dropping. Hotel heating starts to matter every evening. If your plan includes Gulmarg gondola, keep a flexible morning because upper stations react to wind and cloud faster than the city.

Kashmir in October end (about 21–31 Oct)

Evenings feel properly cold. Srinagar minima near the monthly normal (around 6°C) are common, and some nights go lower. Higher meadows feel sharp. This is when families ask us about early snow. See the snowfall section below. If you travel in the last week, prioritise heated rooms and shorter outdoor blocks for younger children.

Does Kashmir see snowfall in October?

Short answer: Possible on higher reaches. Uncommon in Srinagar city and Pahalgam town in a typical October.

IMD’s Srinagar October table shows rainfall, not a guaranteed snow total for the city. Snow needs colder air and elevation. In practice:

• Srinagar bazaars and Boulevard Road rarely need snow boots in October.
• Gulmarg and other high ridges have a better chance of light snow during a cold spell, more often toward month end.
• Early October can still bring light snow over higher elevations when a western disturbance is active. Local news quoting the Met Department in late September 2026 noted possible light snowfall over higher reaches around early October spells. That is a short-range outlook, not a season promise. Re-check IMD before you travel.
