The drive from Srinagar

Pahalgam is about 96 km from Srinagar, roughly three hours by road. The drive goes south through the saffron fields of Pampore and past the old temple ruins at Awantipora, then turns up the Lidder valley. The last stretch runs beside the river with pine forest on both sides, and that is where most people ask the driver to stop for photographs.

You can do Pahalgam as a long day trip and sleep in Srinagar, or stay one or two nights in the valley. A day trip means leaving early. Staying over gives you an evening by the river and an unhurried morning in the side valleys. Our Srinagar to Pahalgam taxi page covers the drive on its own.

Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari

The three side valleys are the main reason to go. Your own cab stops in Pahalgam town, and from there local union cars take you to Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari. They are booked on the spot and paid there, and we explain how the system works before you leave Srinagar.

Betaab Valley: a flat riverside meadow with paths and small bridges. The easiest of the three for children and older parents.
Aru: a wider meadow higher up the valley. Ponies are the usual way on from Aru to Lidderwat for people who want a longer outing.
Chandanwari: the furthest of the three, up the road toward the Yatra route. In the Yatra season it is the start of the Amarnath trek.

Things to do in Pahalgam

Walk by the Lidder river, take a pony ride on the trails above town, or try rafting on the Lidder from late spring into summer. A rafting run takes about an hour, including kitting up, and the rapids are mostly gentle to moderate. Rafting and ponies are paid locally and are not in the package price.

Fit walkers can do longer day hikes from late spring to early autumn. Higher trails keep their snow until June, and by late October snow starts to return to the high paths.

When to go

Spring and early summer bring green meadows and snow still on the higher points. In July and August the Amarnath Yatra runs through Pahalgam, so expect convoys, busier roads and some route restrictions near the Yatra tracks. September and October are clearer and calmer.
