The best hotels in Kashmir for solo travelers are not always the fanciest ones. They are the ones in the right area: walkable, well-reviewed, with staff who will tell you honestly whether the Gulmarg road is open tomorrow. For most people travelling alone, that means Boulevard Road or Rajbagh in Srinagar, a registered houseboat on Dal or Nigeen Lake, and a simple, well-located stay in Pahalgam or Gulmarg.

Where to Stay in Srinagar as a Solo Traveller
Srinagar will be your base for most of the trip. Pick the neighbourhood first, then the property.
Boulevard Road and Dalgate
This is the easiest area for a first solo trip. Boulevard Road runs along Dal Lake, the shikara ghats are right there, and there are always people around in the evening. You can walk to the lake, find a meal easily and get a cab any time.
For a government-run option, JKTDC operates Hotel Heemal on Boulevard Road and Hotel Kashmir Residency at the Tourist Reception Centre near Dalgate. Government hotels are not boutique stays, but many solo travellers like the predictability. Book through the official JKTDC website.
Rajbagh
Rajbagh sits along the Jhelum, a short drive from Dal Lake. It is more residential and quieter at night, with cafes and guesthouses tucked into the lanes. A good pick if you want calm evenings and do not mind taking a cab to the lake.
Nishat and the Shalimar side
Further along the lake, near the Mughal gardens. Zostel Srinagar is here, on Shalimar Road near Nishat Bagh, a short walk from Dal Lake. It has dorms (including female-only dorms) and private rooms, a garden and a rooftop. It is a real backpacker hostel and adults-only, so it suits young solo travellers who want company. Note that Zostel does not accept local IDs at check-in, which matters only if you hold a J&K address.
Houseboats for Solo Travellers: Dal Lake or Nigeen?
Staying one night on a houseboat is something we recommend to almost everyone. Solo travellers ask us whether it is safe. The honest answer: it depends entirely on which houseboat.
- Dal Lake houseboats are closer to the action and the shikara ghats on Boulevard Road. Some areas feel busy and commercial.
- Nigeen Lake is quieter, with fewer touts and calmer mornings. Many repeat visitors prefer it.
Choose a houseboat registered with the Department of Tourism, with recent reviews from other solo guests. Confirm who picks you up at the ghat, whether the shikara transfer is included, and whether the family running the boat lives on it or next to it. For women travelling alone, we usually suggest a family-run houseboat over a boat run only by staff.
In winter, ask specifically about heating. A cold houseboat in January is not a fun experience.
Where to Stay in Gulmarg Alone
Gulmarg is about 51 km from Srinagar. Many solo travellers simply do it as a day trip and save money. If you want to stay the night, and see the meadow empty after the day crowd leaves, it is worth it.
Stay close to the gondola base so you can be in the queue early. JKTDC runs the Gulmarg Hutments and the Tourist Bungalow Alambal in Gulmarg. The Alambal property lists bunk beds, a rare budget-friendly option here. Private hotels near the main meadow get booked out fast in the snow season, so plan early for December to March.
One practical point: Gulmarg is very quiet at night, and most places to eat are inside hotels. Pick a stay with a proper in-house restaurant.
Solo Stays in Pahalgam
Pahalgam, about 95 km from Srinagar, is the best place in Kashmir to slow down for a couple of days. Riverside walks along the Lidder, the pony trail to Baisaran and the drive to Aru Valley are easy to do alone.
Options we can confirm exist:
- Zostel Pahalgam in Dehwatoo, with private rooms and dorms, a common room and a bonfire area. Adults only, and good for meeting other travellers.
- JKTDC Pahalgam Resort and JKTDC Hotel Alpine Pahalgam, both government-run.
- The Pahalgam Club and Convention Centre by JKTDC, with river-view rooms, for a more comfortable stay.
Remember that local sightseeing to Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari runs on union taxis. Solo travellers can sometimes share one with others at the stand, which cuts the cost.
Sonamarg: Day Trip or Overnight?
Sonamarg is roughly 80 km from Srinagar. For most solo travellers, we suggest a day trip. Options for an overnight stay are fewer, and in winter access depends on snow and road clearance.
If you do want to stay, JKTDC runs the JKTDC Sonamarg Resort. Check that the property is operating on your dates before you plan around it, especially outside summer.

- Book the first two nights before you arrive. Walking around with luggage looking for a room is when touts find you.
- Read the most recent reviews, and look for ones from solo guests and women specifically.
- Arrange your airport pickup in advance through your hotel or agency.
- Bring a postpaid SIM or buy a local prepaid SIM in Srinagar. Prepaid SIMs from other states do not work in J&K.
- Carry a scarf for shrines like Hazratbal and dress modestly in the old city.
- Keep cash for small payments in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, where card and UPI can fail with poor signal.
