Srinagar Houseboat Stay

A night on a Kashmir houseboat is the classic Srinagar experience: carved cedar interiors, lake views and a Shikara at the door. D2 Holidays arranges traditional and deluxe houseboats that match your budget and season.

We use boats on Dal Lake and on Nigeen. Dal is the lively one, close to Boulevard and to our office at Ghat No. 7. Nigeen is quieter, which a lot of families prefer once the children are asleep. Category changes the bathroom, the heating and how much deck you get. We send photos of the actual boat before you confirm.

A common plan is one houseboat night at the start, then hotels inland. Couples sometimes stay longer. With kids, one night is usually the right amount unless you know they like the idea of sleeping on the water.

Is a houseboat a good idea with children?

Often yes, for one night, on a boat we know. The things that go wrong are practical: a long shikara after a late flight, a bathroom a small child is nervous about, and dinner that is later than their usual hour. We pick a ghat with a short shikara, and we say if a hotel on Boulevard is the calmer first night.

You get to the boat from a ghat, not from a car parked at the door. The airport to Dal Lake transfer is how most families arrive.

What should you ask before you confirm a boat?

We do not publish a nightly rate. Boats move with the month and with how early you ask. The quote is the rate.

• Which lake, and how long the shikara is from the ghat
• Heating in winter, and whether the bathroom is attached
• Meal plan. Breakfast and dinner is common. We write it down
• How many rooms are actually on that boat, so you are not sharing a corridor with a loud group
• The photos match the boat you will sleep on, not a sister vessel
