The best moments of a Kashmir trip are usually simple ones: a shikara at sunset, a child's first snowball in Gulmarg, a slow walk beside the Lidder. The six activities below are the ones that fit most easily into a family holiday. Each page explains where it happens, which months it runs, and how much of your day it takes.
Apart from the Shikara ride that comes with most of our Srinagar packages, these are paid on the spot, because local rates and the weather change. Tell us which ones you want when you enquire, and we plan the driving days so there is time for them.
Shikara Ride
An hour on Dal Lake or Nigeen in a covered wooden boat. Best at sunset, or at dawn for the floating vegetable market. Part of most Srinagar packages.
Horse Riding
Led pony rides to meadows and glacier points in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg. No experience needed, since a handler walks with you. Paid locally.
Skiing
Gulmarg from December to March: a first lesson on the nursery slopes, or long runs from Apharwat for experienced skiers. Gear and instructors are hired locally.
Whitewater Rafting
Snowmelt rafting on the Lidder at Pahalgam and the Sindh near Sonamarg, from late spring into summer. Mostly gentle to moderate rapids.
Paragliding
Tandem flights with a licensed pilot, so no training is needed. Weather-dependent, usually from spring to autumn. Plan a flexible slot.
Hiking
Easy meadow walks and harder day hikes in Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Gulmarg, from Betaab to Lidderwat. Best from late spring to early autumn.
