For a lot of families, the whole Kashmir trip is really about one moment: the first time the kids step out of the cab and their boots sink into real snow. In winter that moment usually happens in Gulmarg. It is close enough to Srinagar for a day trip, the meadow is wide and open, and there is plenty for children to do even if nobody in the family has ever skied.
The catch is that a snow day with kids goes wrong in small, avoidable ways. Wet gloves by 11 am, a cab stuck at Tangmarg without chains, a toddler who is done before the gondola queue moves. This is how we plan the day for families so it ends with tired, happy children rather than tears in the back seat.
When Gulmarg actually has snow
Snow in Gulmarg is never on a fixed calendar. Early November can bring a first dusting that melts in a couple of days, and some years the meadow stays brown well into December. Steady snow cover is far more likely from late December to February. If your dates are in November, treat snow as a bonus and keep the Gulmarg day flexible, so you can move it to whichever day the forecast looks best once you are in Srinagar.
Fresh heavy snowfall can also close the road for a few hours or make the gondola stop. That is normal here and not a reason to cancel the trip, but it is a reason not to lock Gulmarg into your last day.
Getting there with children
Most families do Gulmarg as a day trip from Srinagar, leaving after an early breakfast. Starting early matters more in winter than in summer: the light goes by late afternoon, the roads ice up again after sunset, and the best snow play is in the late morning when it is a little warmer.
- Book a cab that can carry snow chains, or confirm the driver will arrange them at Tangmarg if the road needs them. A Srinagar to Gulmarg taxi with a driver who does this route in winter saves a lot of stress.
- Keep a bag with spare socks, gloves and a full change of clothes for each child in the car, not in the hotel.
- Carry snacks and a flask of something warm. Food is available up top, but hungry kids rarely wait well in a queue.
- If a child gets car sick, sit them by a window and stop once on the way up rather than pushing through.
What kids can do in the snow
You do not need a ski lesson or a gondola ride for a great day. For children under about six, the open meadow is often the highlight: snowballs, a snowman, lying back to make snow angels, and a sledge ride.
Sledge rides
Local sledge pullers work the slopes around the meadow and will pull children (and adults) on wooden sledges. Agree the price and the route clearly before you start, and ask for a gentle slope for small kids. Hold younger children on your lap rather than letting them ride alone.
A first ski lesson
Gulmarg is one of the best places in India to try skiing, and there are beginner slopes with instructors and equipment hire near the base. Children of school age usually pick up the basics in an hour or two of a private lesson. Keep the first session short, stop while they are still enjoying it, and dress them in waterproof trousers rather than jeans. See our skiing in Kashmir page if you want us to arrange gear and an instructor.
The gondola
The Gulmarg Gondola is a big part of the day for many families. Phase 1 up to Kongdori is the easier option with kids, with more snow and space to play at the top. Phase 2 goes much higher and is colder and windier, and it is often shut when the weather turns. Book tickets ahead in peak season, as walk-up queues can be long. Our guide to Gulmarg Gondola tickets explains the booking steps.
A simple day plan
| Time | What to do | Tip for kids |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning | Leave Srinagar after breakfast | Dress in base layers in the hotel, add jackets in the car |
| Mid morning | Arrive, snow play on the meadow | Start with snow play before anything that needs queuing |
| Late morning | Gondola Phase 1 or a short ski lesson | Pick one, not both, for children under eight |
| Lunch | Hot meal and a proper warm-up indoors | Change wet gloves and socks now |
| Early afternoon | Sledge ride or more play | Watch for cold hands and quiet, tired faces |
| Mid afternoon | Head back down | Leave before the light goes and the road freezes |
Clothes that actually work
Cotton is the enemy on a snow day. Once it is wet, it stays cold. Layer children in thermals, a fleece or warm sweater, and a waterproof jacket. Waterproof gloves are worth more than any other item, and a second pair is better still. Snow boots can be hired near the meadow, but sizes for small children run out fast, so bring your own if you can. Sunglasses help too, since the glare off fresh snow is strong even on cloudy days.

Day trip or a night in Gulmarg?
A day trip works well for most families, especially with younger children who sleep better in a familiar room in Srinagar. Staying a night in Gulmarg makes sense if your kids are older and want to ski properly, or if you want to be on the slopes early before the day visitors arrive. If you do stay, ask the hotel exactly how rooms are heated and whether there is hot water through the night, because winter nights in Gulmarg are very cold.
Questions families ask us
Is Gulmarg safe for toddlers in winter?
Yes, with care. Keep toddlers on the flat meadow, limit time outside to short spells with warm breaks in between, and skip Phase 2 of the gondola. If your child has a cold or a cough, keep the day short.
Can we combine Gulmarg with other places on the same day?
We do not recommend it in winter. The drive takes longer on snowy roads and the days are short, so give Gulmarg the full day.
What if there is no snow when we visit?
The drive and the meadow are still beautiful, and Phase 1 of the gondola often has snow when the meadow does not. If snow is the main goal, keep the day flexible and we will help you move it.
Planning a winter family trip
Gulmarg fits best as one day in a four to six night trip based mostly in Srinagar, with a shikara ride on Dal Lake and a slow day in the city to balance the cold. Our Kashmir family package is built around that pace, and the Gulmarg destination page has more on the area.
