Pony and Horse Rides in Gulmarg, Pahalgam

In Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, ponies carry visitors to meadows and glacier points that would otherwise be a long, steep walk. A local pony handler walks beside you the whole way, so no riding experience is needed.

Where the ponies go

Sonamarg: the classic ride is up the valley towards Thajiwas glacier, where there is snow well into summer. The pony saves most of an hour of uphill walking.
Gulmarg: trails lead out across the meadow and up towards Khilanmarg and other viewpoints. In winter the same ground is covered by sledges instead.
Pahalgam: ponies work the trails above the town and along the valleys, and they are the usual way to reach Lidderwat from Aru.

How the pony system works

Pony handlers in the resort towns are local and work through their own associations. Routes and rates are usually fixed locally rather than bargained from scratch. Before you get on, agree three things: the exact points on the route, how long you will be out, and the total fare for everyone. Pay at the end, not the start.

Your driver can point you to the proper pony stand, but the ride itself is paid on the spot. Ponies are not included in our packages, because the rate depends on the route you choose on the day.

Safety for children and older parents

The handler leads the pony on foot. Small children can sit in front of a parent, or ride their own pony with the handler holding the rein.
Lean forward going uphill and back going down, and hold the saddle, not the reins.
Get off and walk on steep, muddy stretches after rain. There is no shame in it.
Anyone with back trouble, or who is pregnant, should skip the ride.

Pony or walk?

Walking costs nothing and is often the better choice on a flat meadow. A pony earns its fare on the long climbs, like Thajiwas in Sonamarg, or when a grandparent wants to see the view without the hike. Families on a tight budget often hire ponies for the children only and walk alongside.
