Skiing

Gulmarg is India's best-known ski town. From December to March you can take a first lesson on the gentle slopes near the village, or, if you are experienced, ride the gondola to Apharwat for long runs and deep snow.

Why Gulmarg

The town sits at about 2,650 metres, and the Gulmarg Gondola climbs in two stages: Phase 1 to Kongdoori, and Phase 2 to Apharwat at close to 4,000 metres. There are also chair lifts and small lifts near the village. The season usually runs from December to March, and January and February tend to have the most reliable snow.

Your first time on skis

Beginners start on the gentle slopes near the village, not at the top of the gondola. Skis, boots and poles are hired in Gulmarg. Hire an instructor for at least the first morning. The Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering runs courses in Gulmarg, and local instructors teach by the hour or the day.

Children pick it up quickly. A half day of lessons is often enough for them to enjoy the snow, followed by a sledge ride for the ones who have had enough of falling over.

For experienced skiers

Apharwat is famous for off-piste and backcountry skiing, and that brings real avalanche risk. Ski it with a qualified local guide, carry avalanche gear, and check the day's bulletin. We arrange your stay, transfers and the plan around the snow. The mountain guiding is done by specialist guides.

Families and budget

• A day trip from Srinagar is cheaper but leaves only a few hours on the snow. Staying in Gulmarg gives you the quiet morning slopes.
• Hire snow jackets and boots at Tangmarg or Gulmarg instead of buying them for one trip.
• After heavy snow, the road above Tangmarg can be limited to vehicles with chains or four-wheel drive.
• Ski hire, lessons and ski passes are not included in our packages. They are paid in Gulmarg.
