Eating well in Srinagar with kids
Yes, you can eat well in Srinagar with children without turning every meal into a spice test. Keep hotel breakfast and dinner as the daily base, book one proper Kashmiri evening, and treat street food as short, watched stops. Mirchi Korma has been in the news because Kashmiri singer Qazi Touqeer, on Bigg Boss 20, talked about inviting a fellow contestant home for the dish his family cooks. That is cultural context only. D2 Holidays is not affiliated with Bigg Boss, with Qazi, or with any contestant.
This post is the family version: what Mirchi Korma is, how wazwan works with kids, street stalls versus hotel meals, CP and MAP codes, and how food sits inside a Kashmir family package. For the city base, see Srinagar.
What Mirchi Korma is
Mirchi Korma is a classic Kashmiri meat dish, usually mutton, cooked with dried Kashmiri red chillies, yoghurt and valley spices. It is rich and chilli-forward. It is not a mild hotel gravy with a fancy label, and it is not a recipe we can claim from anyone's home kitchen. Television talk about "my mother's Mirchi Korma" means home cooking. On holiday you will meet restaurant or wazwan-house versions that aim for the same idea.
With children, share the plate. Ask for a milder gravy on the side, or let adults take the heat while kids eat rice, yoghurt, a milder korma or a simple vegetable. Tell the kitchen early if anyone cannot handle chilli. Tourist-facing kitchens often adjust; a feast cooked for guests who expect heat may not.
Wazwan for families
Wazwan is the multi-course Kashmiri feast, traditionally meat-heavy, served on a shared copper plate (the trami). A full ceremonial set can run very long. Tourist evenings are usually shorter. For parents, the win is pacing, not collecting every dish name.
- One feast night, not three. One wazwan evening is memorable. Two in a row is hard on small stomachs.
- Ask about children's plates. Rice, milder gravy, yoghurt and a simple vegetable beat a full adult trami.
- Vegetarian and Jain need a different order. A classic wazwan is a meat meal. Say so when you enquire.
- Ask your hotel for a wazwan house or a waza evening. We do not print a restaurant list. Names and dates change; the hotel desk or our Srinagar office can match a booking.
- Start early. Agree a time that gets you back to the room before bedtime collapses.
Larger mixed groups can compare the private family plan with our Kashmir group tour package. Same food rules: one special night, clear spice notes, ages on the enquiry.
Street food vs hotel meals
Street food belongs on the trip if stops stay short and watched. Hotel meals keep energy steady on Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonamarg days.
Street food that fits
- Bakery and noon chai stops mid-morning
- A watched snack between gardens and the lake, not as the only lunch on a long drive
- Sweet or dry-fruit stops in the old city when you are already walking
When the hotel wins
- Breakfast before an early valley start
- Dinner after a long road day
- Any day someone has a sensitive stomach and needs a kitchen you already trust
We do not name unverified stalls here. Use the hotel's advice, your driver's usual reliable stops, or ask our Boulevard Road desk. If a place feels wrong for cleanliness, heat or timing, skip it.
Hygiene, spice, vegetarian options, CP and MAP
Hygiene
- Water and wet wipes in the day bag
- Prefer busy stalls for fried snacks; avoid food that has been sitting out
- Keep hotel dinner as a fallback on the same day you try something new
Spice
Kashmiri chilli is often more colour and aroma than the sharpest plains heat, but Mirchi Korma and several wazwan gravies still hit hard for many children. Say "mild for the kids." Yoghurt and rice are the reset.
Vegetarian and Jain
Most leisure hotels can manage vegetarian thalis, paneer, seasonal vegetables and rice. Jain needs (no onion, garlic, or root vegetables where required) belong on the booking, not on night three. Do not treat a classic wazwan as a Jain default; ask for a separate order.
Meal plan codes
These are standard hotel codes. Exact dishes still depend on the property:
- EP - room only
- CP - breakfast included
- MAP - breakfast and dinner included
- AP - all three meals included
Most D2 Srinagar package quotes are built around breakfast and dinner (MAP-style), with lunches on your own during sightseeing. The quote spells it out. See the Kashmir tour packages page. Houseboat nights often follow the same pattern; the houseboat page says the quote names the meal plan.
Sample food day (family pace)
| Time | Meal idea | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Hotel breakfast (CP/MAP) | Steady start before gardens or the lake |
| Late morning | Tea and bakery stop | Short, easy to abandon |
| Lunch | Hotel or a simple place near morning sights | Avoid a heavy feast before a shikara |
| Evening | Hotel MAP dinner, or one booked Kashmiri evening | One special night; keep other dinners predictable |
On valley days (Gulmarg about two hours each way, Pahalgam around three), keep lunch practical: hotel packed lunch or a known driver stop. Save the big Kashmiri dinner for a Srinagar night without a dawn departure next morning.
How food fits a D2 family stay
Our family plan keeps one hotel in Srinagar and drives out for the valleys, so children unpack once and eat from a known breakfast room. An optional houseboat night is available, but not default for every family; some children dislike a dark shikara after a late flight. Put ages on the enquiry for the family package.
Solo travellers looking at a fixed Delhi group departure use a different product: our BigBoss Kashmir tour package (D2's own group-trip name, not related to the TV show) includes breakfast and dinner at the Srinagar stay. Families on a private trip should use the family package or a custom quote. Background: Kashmir trip with strangers from Delhi. Day transport: cab service.
What to tell us before we quote
- Children's ages and anyone who needs mild food only
- Vegetarian, eggetarian or Jain requirements
- Whether you want one Kashmiri or wazwan evening booked ahead
- Whether a houseboat night is yes, maybe, or no
- Allergies you already manage at home

Kashmir food with kids: common questions
Is Mirchi Korma too spicy for children?
Often yes as a full portion. Share it, ask for mild, and keep yoghurt and rice on the table.
Can we do wazwan with toddlers?
Yes if you start early, ask for simpler children's plates, and skip it on the same day as a long valley drive.
Should street food cover lunch every day?
No. Use stalls as extras. Keep hotel breakfast and most dinners as the base.
What does MAP mean on our quote?
Breakfast and dinner at the stay. Lunch is usually on your own unless the quote says otherwise.
Do you publish a best-restaurant list?
Not here. Kitchens and dates change. We match the evening through the hotel or our desk when you ask.
Plan the food days with your trip
Tell us who is eating, how spicy the special night should be, and whether the children need mild defaults. We will shape the Srinagar stay and day-trip lunches around that inside a family package or a custom quote. Start from the Kashmir family package or the contact page.
