Dachigam National Park with Kids: A November Visit

Travel · October 21, 2026

Dachigam is the closest big wild place to Srinagar. The district administration puts it 22 km from the city, which makes it a morning out rather than a day trip. For most of October it has been shut. The Wildlife Department closed the park to visitors until 31 October 2026 for the hangul rut, and the in-charge ranger told reporters it reopens on 1 November.

So November is the first real window this season. It is also a good month for a family visit, if you plan it as a quiet walk with a small chance of seeing a rare deer, and not as a safari with a promise attached.

Why the park closes in October

The hangul is the Kashmir stag. It is endangered, and Dachigam is where most of the surviving animals live. The Wildlife Department's census reported 289 hangul in 2023, about 275 of them inside Dachigam.

The rutting season is the breeding period. According to the ranger quoted by Kashmir News Service, it starts around 25 September and runs for about a month and a half. Stags call and compete for mates, and the department wants no people walking through the middle of that. The closure order lets in only department staff, emergencies and security work.

For a family this has one practical meaning. Do not book anything for the last days of October, and do not trust a hotel desk that says "it should be open". Wait for the booking portal to show November dates.

What the park is like

The Directorate of Tourism describes Dachigam as about 141 sq km of steep forested slopes and grassy pastures. Besides the hangul, it lists the Himalayan black bear, the leopard and more than 150 kinds of birds.

The part visitors see is Lower Dachigam, the broad valley floor near the entrance, with a stream, old walnut and mulberry trees, and woods on the slopes. Upper Dachigam is high, rough country and not something to attempt with children.

In November the trees are turning or already bare, the light is low and soft, and the paths are quieter than in summer. It does not feel like a zoo or a garden. Children who like looking under leaves and listening for birds will be happy. Children who expect animals on cue will not, unless you set that up honestly in the car.

Booking the permission

Entry is by permission from the Department of Wildlife Protection, applied for online through the park's booking portal. The rules on that page are worth reading before you plan the day:

  • One booking per day, and a group can be up to 15 people.
  • You upload a photo ID (as a .jpeg) for one person in the group.
  • Indian and foreign visitors cannot be on the same booking. A mixed family makes two bookings, and a passport copy is needed for the foreign members.
  • The park is closed every Tuesday.
  • Once the booking is confirmed and paid, there is no refund and no date change.

That last rule matters with children. Pick a date you are sure of, not the first free morning of the trip, and keep a spare day in the plan. The portal lists the entry fees, including what applies to children, so check them there when you book.

If you would rather not deal with the portal on holiday, tell us your dates and the ages in the group and we can talk you through it.

Getting there, and what happens at the gate

From Srinagar the road runs out past Shalimar and Harwan, so Dachigam fits well with the gardens on the north side of Dal. Our Kashmir tourist places with distance table has Harwan at 19 km and Dachigam at 22 km, with rough drive times.

The ranger also confirmed that private vehicles are not allowed to move inside the park. Plan on your car dropping you at the entrance and waiting there. Everything after the gate is on foot, at your children's pace.

Our cab service drivers know the road. Ask for a driver who will wait, because there is no point in being dropped and then hunting for a ride back with tired children.

What children might see, and how to talk about it

Be honest in the car. A hangul sighting is a maybe. Hangul are shy, and they move up and down the slopes with the season and the weather. Some families see one, some see a distant shape, many see none.

What children are much more likely to find:

  • Birds, lots of them, along the stream and in the bare branches.
  • Hoof prints and droppings on muddy edges, which a ten-year-old will find more exciting than you expect.
  • The stream itself, cold and clear.
  • Fallen leaves deep enough to kick through on the valley floor.

Turn it into a game before you start. Who hears the first bird, who spots the first print, who can walk for five minutes without speaking. Quiet children see more, and they know it once you tell them.

Bears, and staying together

Himalayan black bears live in Dachigam. An older Wildlife Institute of India study found the lower valley holds most of the park's bears, drawn by its oak, walnut and mulberry trees. That is the same part you will be walking in.

None of this is a reason to stay away. It is a reason for a few firm rules:

  • Stay on the track and stay together. No one runs ahead around a bend.
  • Small children hold a hand or ride in a carrier.
  • Keep food sealed in a bag and eat where you are told it is fine, not along the path.
  • If staff at the gate give advice about where to walk that day, follow it.
  • Take all litter back to the car.

If an adult in the group is nervous, it is better to say so and keep the walk short than to push on.

Timing your morning

Go early. Mornings are when the valley is quietest, and November afternoons get short fast. We have not printed gate opening hours because we could not confirm them from an official source; check them on the portal or with us before you set off.

Here are sunrise and sunset times for Dachigam in November 2026, which we worked out from the park's location (our calculation, not an official table):

Date Sunrise Sunset
1 November 6:49 am 5:37 pm
8 November 6:56 am 5:31 pm
15 November 7:02 am 5:26 pm
22 November 7:09 am 5:22 pm
30 November 7:16 am 5:20 pm

The light goes well before sunset in a valley with hills on both sides. Aim to be walking back towards the gate by early afternoon.

IMD's 1991-2020 normals for Srinagar give November an average of about 15.9 C by day and 1.2 C at night. A shaded valley floor in the morning will feel closer to the night figure.

What to pack

  • Warm layers for everyone, plus a hat and gloves for the children.
  • Shoes with grip; leaves hide mud and roots.
  • Water and simple snacks in a sealed bag. Do not count on buying food inside.
  • A small pair of binoculars, if you own one. It changes the morning for an eight-year-old.
  • A carrier for a toddler. A pram is not the right tool here.
  • Printed or saved booking confirmation and the ID you uploaded.
  • A bag for litter.

Our Kashmir in winter with kids post has a longer list for cold mornings, and the October weather in Kashmir guide explains how fast the days cool in autumn.

Who it suits, and who might skip it

Dachigam works best for children from about six up who can walk for an hour and manage being quiet. Teenagers who like photography or wildlife usually love it.

With a toddler, keep it to a short loop near the entrance, then go on to Harwan or Shalimar where there is grass to run on.

For grandparents, the walk is the limit, because the car stops at the gate. If walking on uneven ground is hard for them, a garden morning is the better choice. Our Kashmir trip with elderly parents post has gentler ideas.

If your family wants a guaranteed animal, skip it. That is not what the park is for.

Dachigam with kids: questions parents ask

Is Dachigam open in November?

The department's order closed it until 31 October 2026, with reopening on 1 November. It is closed on Tuesdays. Check the booking portal for the dates actually on offer before you plan around it.

Can we just turn up at the gate?

The portal says permission has to be applied for online, so book before you go rather than counting on the gate.

Can we drive inside the park?

No. Private vehicles are not allowed to move inside, so plan to walk from the entrance.

Will we definitely see a hangul?

No. Treat it as a bonus. Birds, tracks and the stream are what most families remember.

How long should we plan for?

A morning is enough with children. Leave the city early, walk for as long as the youngest is happy, and be back at the car by early afternoon.

What can we pair it with?

Harwan and Shalimar are on the same side of the city. Our Srinagar sightseeing with kids plan shows how to keep a garden stop short and stress-free.

Planning Dachigam with D2 Holidays

Dachigam is easy to fit into a Srinagar stay: one morning, a car that waits, and an afternoon that ends with lunch and a rest. Our Kashmir family package can include it on a city day, and our Srinagar page has the rest of what is close by.

Tell us your dates, the children's ages and whether anyone in the group finds walking hard. We will check that the park is open for those dates and send a written plan. You can reach us through the contact page, or drop in at our office on Boulevard Road.
