What the New Year week is really like

Late December is the start of Chillai Kalan, the forty coldest days of the Kashmiri winter. Nights go well below freezing and mornings are misty. Snow is likely in Gulmarg but never promised, and Srinagar may be dry and grey even when the mountains are white.

This is also one of the busiest weeks of the year for Gulmarg hotels. Rooms go early, and rates for the holiday week are higher than in January. Which night falls on 31 December depends on the day you land, so tell us your dates and we set the Gulmarg night where you want it.

Who this trip suits

Families who want the children to see real snow, couples who like the idea of a quiet New Year in the mountains, and anyone happy with cold weather. It is not the trip for someone who hates the cold or wants long sightseeing days. With toddlers, keep outdoor time short and plan the afternoons indoors.

Packing and budget notes

Thermal layers, gloves, a warm cap and waterproof shoes. Hiring snow boots and long coats at Tangmarg is cheaper than buying them for one trip.
Ask how the room is heated: central heating, an electric blanket or a bukhari. We check heating before we book a winter room.
Do not book a tight onward connection on Day 5. Winter weather can move flight times.

Itinerary

Airport pickup and a warm room first. Winter flights into Srinagar are sometimes held up by fog or snow, so the evening stays free. A Shikara on Dal Lake is possible on a clear afternoon, with blankets. Overnight in Srinagar.

Around three hours each way, often longer on winter roads. The Lidder valley in snow is quiet and very pretty. How far the local union cars can go towards Betaab or Aru depends on the snow that week. Back in Srinagar at night.

The climb starts at Tangmarg. After heavy snowfall the last stretch can be limited to vehicles with chains or four-wheel drive. Snow boots and jackets can be hired at Tangmarg. Gondola optional and paid at Gulmarg. Overnight in Gulmarg.

A morning in the snow while it is still fresh: sledges, a first ski lesson, or just a walk. Drive down after lunch. If your hotel is hosting a New Year dinner that night, it is written in the quote. Overnight in Srinagar.

Breakfast and the airport drop. Leave time for security queues, which are slow in winter.
